In Early Access – 2020 | Role – Solo Developer

Beat Blast is a roguelite bullet hell developed by Woolly Walrus Games. We went into Global Game Jam 2019 with the idea of morphing standard bullet hell mechanics into a customizable song that the player can craft as they progress through the game. In the post-jam game testing event, we noticed people were sitting and playing for over 20 minutes at a time with a lineup to try it next. We decided to pursue the game and after roughly 19 months of development, it was released on Steam Early Access. We are intending final release to happen Q3 2021.

Noteworthy technical aspects include:

  • A custom music system that creates attack patterns and player behaviour based off of ‘note’ placement. This might be the most interesting skill tree and attack system I’ve ever worked on.

  • Pattern-based boss battles that evolve over time and engage the player.

  • Custom fog system that grants us the ability to change the atmosphere in an instant and gives Beat Blast its visual identity.

  • Custom systems for projectiles, attributes, collision and more. Everything in Beat Blast is made from scratch with no third party libraries used (except steamworks, InControl and Unity).
